What is a watergate salad and why is it called that?

Watergate salad is a sweet, fluffy dessert that’s main ingredients consist of pistachio pudding, crushed pineapple, whipped topping, mini marshmallows, and either pecans or walnuts. It’s thought to have originated in the Midwest and quickly gained popularity for its easy prep and unique flavor. This dish dates back to the ‘70s, and the reason for its name isn’t entirely clear. One story suggests that a chef invented it, and it became popular enough to be nicknamed after the hotel where he worked, Washington, D.C.’s famous Watergate Hotel. Regardless of whether that story is true, watergate salad is a classic that you have to try!

Can I make Watergate salad ahead of time?

Absolutely, you can! In fact, it often tastes even better after sitting in the fridge for a few hours or even overnight, as the flavors have a chance to meld together. Just prepare as directed, cover it tightly, and store it in the refrigerator! If you’re making it a day or two in advance, just keep in mind that it might need a quick stir before serving, as some separation may occur. Can I add other ingredients, like fruit or different nuts?

You can absolutely customize your watergate salad by adding other ingredients like fruit or different nuts.
