Dole Packaged Foods joins Brookshire Grocery Company and Captain Planet Foundation to celebrate Project Learning at Lakeshore Elementary School in Monroe, LA

May 11, 2017, Monroe, LA - - Today Dr. Don Coker, Superintendent, Ouachita Parish, joined executives from Brookshire Grocery Co., Dole Packaged Foods, and Captain Planet Foundation at Lakeshore Elementary School to inaugurate a special Learning Garden for the school. These three organizations joined forces with Lakeshore Elementary to offer students the opportunity to interact with the environment through a learning garden, while expanding their palates and learning about food origins.

Lakeshore Elementary School was one of three schools designated in the fall of 2016 for a “Learning Garden Grant,” a community outreach initiative by Dole and Brookshire’s that offered Monroe-area schools the chance to receive the installation of a Learning Garden. Jack Hayes Elementary and Sallie Humble Elementary were also selected.

“Here at Dole, we understand the importance of teaching children the benefits of incorporating fruits and vegetables into their diet, whether they are enjoying fresh produce from their learning garden, or a healthy Dole snack,” said Marty Ordman, Dole Packaged Foods. “By partnering with Captain Planet Foundation and Brookshire’s, we are helping more students learn about and develop healthy habits.”

“Anything can be taught in the context of the garden, and hands-on learning supports student understanding of natural systems, food origins, and healthy eating,” explained Leesa Carter, Executive Director of Captain Planet Foundation. “Captain Planet Foundation is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of environmental stewards, and ensuring they are armed with an understanding of the natural world in which they live. We are thrilled to be working with Brookshire’s and Dole to provide Lakeshore Elementary with a Captain Planet Foundation Learning Garden!”

"We are excited to help bring this Learning Garden to Lakeshore Elementary,” said Kolton Harris, Category Manager for Brookshire’s. “Our company’s mission is to make our communities better through our people, products, stores and service. Education, hunger relief and family well-being are three of our primary focus areas for giving back. We’re excited to partner with Dole in offering programs like this Learning Garden that make an impact in each of these areas."

“Lakeshore Elementary is honored to receive the Learning Garden from Captain Planet,” stated Principal Dr. Scott Crain, “Without grants like this we would not be able to provide extended learning opportunities that engage students beyond the classroom walls and expose them to a healthier life style.”
